This creamy lemon chicken asparagus pasta comes together in one pan. It is practical, satisfying, and built on a short list of quality ingredients. The flavor is bright and savory. The sauce is silky without being heavy. It is the kind of dish that feels calm to cook and genuinely rewarding to eat.
Chicken thighs are the right choice for this recipe. They stay juicy during pan cooking, where breast meat can easily dry out. Cutting them into large, bite-sized cubes allows for even browning and ensures they cook through without becoming tough. Letting them rest undisturbed in the hot pan is important. They will release naturally from the surface once a proper sear has formed. That golden crust carries a lot of flavor and is worth the patience.
The asparagus goes into the same pan as the chicken, which is what makes this recipe so efficient. It absorbs the savory cooking juices the chicken leaves behind. Cutting it into thumb-sized pieces keeps everything proportional to the pasta. After about 15 minutes of shared cooking time, the asparagus is tender but still holds its structure. Not mushy, not raw.

The sauce is built in two stages. First, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a splash of dry white wine deglaze the pan, lifting the caramelized bits from the bottom. A dry wine like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio works best here. That step adds real depth and prevents the sauce from tasting flat. Crème fraîche goes in next, rounding out the acidity and giving the sauce its initial body.
Then comes the Parmigiano Reggiano. It is worth using the real thing. Imitation parmesan does not melt the same way, and the flavor difference is noticeable. Added gradually over low heat and tossed with reserved pasta water, it melts into a glossy, cohesive sauce that clings to the fusilli. The starch in the pasta water is what keeps the sauce smooth rather than clumped or greasy. If it tightens as it cools, a splash of warm pasta water brings it back immediately.

Lemon plays two roles in this chicken asparagus pasta. It deglazes the pan alongside the wine, cutting through the richness of the cooking fat. A final small squeeze just before serving lifts the whole dish. Finishing with lemon zest adds a fragrant, slightly floral note that works well against the nuttiness of the Parmigiano.
Fresh parsley and chives go on at the very end. This keeps their color vivid and their flavor clean. Chives add a gentle, refined allium note that complements both the chicken and the lemon without competing with either. A final grating of Parmigiano Reggiano over each bowl ties everything together.
This is a well-balanced pasta that rewards a little attention. Patient searing, careful sauce-building, and good ingredients do most of the work.

Bring the Pasta Water to a Boil
Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil over high heat.
Prep the Ingredients
Wash the asparagus and lemon. Cut the asparagus into thumb-sized pieces. Grate the Parmigiano Reggiano. Cut the lemon in half. Cut the chicken thighs into large bite-sized cubes and season with salt and black pepper.

Cook the Chicken
Heat a large stainless steel pan over medium heat. Once hot, add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and the chicken. Let the chicken cook undisturbed until it naturally releases from the pan, then give it a stir.

Add the Asparagus
Add the asparagus to the pan and continue cooking the chicken and asparagus together for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and lightly golden

Cook the Pasta
Salt the boiling water generously with sea salt. Add the fusilli and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, stirring once at the beginning.
Deglaze the Pan
Just before the pasta finishes cooking, squeeze in fresh lemon juice and add a splash of white wine to the chicken pan. Let it simmer briefly to lift the flavors from the bottom of the pan. Stir in one tablespoon of Crème fraîche.

Create the Creamy Sauce
Drain the pasta, reserving 1 cup of pasta cooking water. Add the fusilli to the pan with the chicken and asparagus. Add a splash of pasta water and toss to combine. Reduce the heat to low, then gradually add the grated Parmigiano Reggiano, tossing continuously. Add a little more pasta water as needed until the cheese melts into a smooth, glossy sauce that coats the pasta. Finish with a small squeeze of fresh lemon juice for brightness.

Serve
Divide the pasta between bowls. Finish with extra Parmigiano Reggiano, a sprinkle of fresh parsley, chives and lemon zest. Serve immediately.
